Painting with water beads

Painting with water beads is a really interesting way to paint and it was the first time doing it last week for my boy. We had done this before with my girl, way before the little boy was born, so it was still a novel activity for her.

We initially placed some coffee filter paper in a small box together with water beads and I put some paint (their choice of colours) on them and instructed the kids to tilt the box such that the water beads moved around and did the painting. These turned out pretty in the beginning until the filters were entirely soaked up as they were really absorbent so we swapped the filters for normal drawing block.

Note that if you intend to preserve these pretty pieces of art, do stop all the tilting when the colours are really beautifully blended with streaks of paint and marbling to prevent over-mixing of colours. It’d become a brownish mess if you don’t stop. By all means, if it’s just for enjoying the process, then go ahead! ๐Ÿ˜€

Here are some shots taken during the process as well as the pieces of work I saved at the end.

My boy kept trying to squish the water beads and try to move them about with his hand when he started

made with a mixture of cobalt blue, silver and gold

couldn’t resist taking a shot of the beautifully blended colours in between changing papers

I didn’t drain the water beads properly after rinsing the colours off for the next piece so the colour quickly smudged for this piece

I added a touch of red later and it still turned out great

After adding a little more paint and more controlled tilting, here’s the outcome for the blue, silver and gold piece

Here’s one she did with vermillion, white, yellow and light green

And a burst of multiple colours for this piece!

It’s pretty simple to set up – just get a box (we used one of the small Ikea ones), gather some water beads and poster paint. Clean-up was merely rinsing the boxes and the water beads – you needn’t trash the water beads (after cleaning them, they can be saved for future play). You’d probably need to supervise this activity as the kids could get overly excited and water beads might end up all over the floor – spells bad news of course since they are coated with paint. ๐Ÿ™‚ Have fun!

Tim Ho Wan review

Would you believe it?! We finally dined at Tim Ho Wan last Thursday. We had dinner at the Plaza Singapura branch since I went there for SPUR’s newest collection media launch in the afternoon. It’s just impossible to queue for an hour or so for a meal with two kids in tow (which explains why we only got down to trying out the dim sum last week!) – but because we were really early for dinner (at 5.30pm!), we got a seat almost immediately! Ah, such luck!

Of the ‘4 Heavenly Kings’ (ๅ››ๅคงๅคฉ็Ž‹), we ordered only two – the baked bun with BBQ pork (้…ฅ็šฎ็„—ๅ‰็ƒงๅŒ…) and pan fried carrot cake (้ฆ™็…Ž่ๅœ็ณ•). Steamed egg cake and vermicelli roll with pig’s liver just didn’t sound particularly appealing to us. ๐Ÿ˜€

Baked Bun with BBQ pork ($4.50)

Oh these buns were extremely delish!!!! Crispy and slightly sweet with the char siew filling. mmph… I’m still thinking about them!

The pan fried carrot cake was very good too – these weren’t oily and the defined shreds added to the texture of the carrot cake.

Since we usually have har gao (prawn dumplings) and siew mai (pork dumplings with shrimp) when we have dim sum, we ordered them too. They were fresh, but not particularly outstanding.

Pork dumpling with shrimp ($5)

We ordered Congee with lean pork, century egg and salted egg for the kids to share but we ended up eating it in the end as they were too busy eating the Rice with chicken, sausage and mushroom.

The congee was smooth and had quite a generous portion of ingredients ($4.20)

The rice with chicken, sausage and mushroom was packed with ingredients. The rice was very flavourful and though it had a mild ginger taste, the kids were alright with it. The chicken was very tender (even though it didn’t look so) and so it was really quite perfect for the kids (we didn’t give them the sausage or the mushroom).

Hubby had the chicken feet with black bean sauce but he felt that chicken feet at Red Star restaurant tastes better.

The vermicelli roll with shrimp was great too and my little boy was hooked on the sauce and kept asking for it.

I loved the Tonic Medlar & Osmanthus Cake (ๆžๅญๆก‚่Šฑ็ณ•) – so refreshing and left me wishing there were more than just 3 pieces!

I’m a great fan of yam so I couldn’t resist ordering the Yam puree with sago (hot). It could be my expectations were too high because it was a yam dessert but this certainly wasn’t one of my favourites that night.

Overall, the food was good and I think the price is rather reasonable. But I still don’t think I would queue for an hour to eat at Tim Ho Wan. ๐Ÿ™‚
