Creative face masks – for kids, designed by kids

We haven’t done something really arty and specific (as opposed to whatever they usually draw in their free time) in quite awhile – and obviously I haven’t blogged about working on art projects for even longer!

The creative face mask design competition entitled “I have the POWER” organised by Xepa-Soul Pattinson (“XepaSP”) and ADEZIO Allergy & Cold Relief offered an opportunity for us to get creative together as a family and the mention of doing up face masks immediately caught the kids’ attention and captured their interest.

In light of the impending haze and the outbreak of respiratory diseases during this hot and dry period, I thought it was a good time to be spreading the message (and not germs!) that everyone – even kids, can play a pivotal role in fighting against allergy, cough and cold.

“Together we have the power” aims to promote simple personal hygiene practices such as wearing a face mask when down with cold or cough, avoid sharing of food and remembering to wash hands regularly.

It is definitely an excellent family bonding activity – as it was in my home, as I will share more about with you!

Now that the kids are older, we brainstormed together what designs they think would look nice on the face masks. We googled for interesting examples but nothing really caught our eye so we had to rely on our own creative juices.

Getting ready to work on their masks!

We eventually decided to go with an animal mask for my girl while my boy would do a Captain America related one (even though technically, he doesn’t qualify for the competition as the competition is only open to ages 6-12). It was a family affair so everyone gets involved, right? Ultimately, it’s the message that we wanted to inculcate in our children so that they would understand the importance of wearing face masks when they are ill. And of course, it’s the process of the art that matters for kids. 🙂

We went shopping for our props to go with the masks to make it even more fun-filled – we found (sparkly!) cat-ears hairbands at H&M (so we decided on making a cat mask) and a Captain America shield at Toys ‘R’ Us to go with my the Captain America theme for my boy’s.

So first, I traced out the mask (you can download the copy from this link) on rough paper and trimmed the lower portion to fit my children’s faces as it was obviously too large for them. Then we sketched the design on our draft copy and adjusted the details to fit the kids’ faces.

We had to adjust the cat features upwards to suit my girl’s face and obviously, somebody else couldn’t wait to work on his mask.

After the draft was completed, my girl drew the design on the actual mask:

Although Captain America usually wears his mask with the “A” on his head, my little Captain America fan will wear his “A” on his face mask. I used good quality washi tape (I used 3M) to make an “A” on his mask and his task was to colour the mask blue in various shades of blue.

The kids busied themselves with colouring their masks with colour pencils:

And when the colouring was done, I removed the washi tape and there we have a nice “A” without fuss! (That’s why using a good quality washi tape is important – or else the tape would peel off together with the mask and ruin the mask).

I had to help fill some gaps of course for my little boy.

While my girl was still busy decorating her mask, my little one was all revved up to put on his mask so I punched the holes and strung the rubber bands through:

You can tell he’s a Captain America fan, right?

Attempting a serious look

After my girl was done with hers, she decided that she wanted to be on her fours like a cat to follow through with the theme of her mask and I thought that was a great idea:

Close up of how I looped the rubber bands gently on the ears – no pressure or pain at all

So that’s it, here are the kids’ masks:

They enjoyed role playing with their masks for awhile and of course, since these aren’t meant to be worn for prolonged periods of time as a face mask, their soft toys inherited those face masks in their pretend play.

What I do during my me-time

Me-time became an alien concept when I first got promoted to the status of mom. Everything I did revolved around the baby and it took a long while before I finally got a hang of my new ‘job’.

I recall my earliest indulgences in Me-time activities as a newly minted mom involved logging into a motherhood forum, exchanging exciting tales of breastfeeding difficulties, milestones, decoding what the colour of the poop that day meant and encouraging the newer moms.

It sounds so trivial but that time kept me in touch with the world, well, somehow. It wasn’t the same as going to work and meeting real life people, but it was as real as it could get. And I needed it when I was stuck home with a fussy baby. I needed to know that there were people out there who have the same struggles and fears. And they were people who could empathise with my joy, my pain and everything in between.

A year later , clearly typing in stock responses to people with the same questions day in day out wasn’t making the cut to enriching my day.

So I started blogging. I started with super banal stuff that no one else would be interested in and eventually moved on to the more interesting material (I hope it has been so!) that has brought you to this post now. I can’t remember when or what the turning point was though. 🙂

This blog is still functional so it’s still what I update in my me-time but in the recent year or so, I’d say blogging is just one of the things that vie for my very limited me-time.

I shared how a day in my life is like earlier this year and how I try to fit pockets of Me-time in my day. But that obviously didn’t capture all my favourites where Me-time activities are concerned.

In the past few years I’ve picked up books now and then but since last year, I decided that I’d start reading again. It’s difficult to keep track though since I’ve become more forgetful and more easily distracted. And there are just so many things I want to do so sometimes reading doesn’t make it to the top of my list. Nevertheless, I still treasure the times that I get to curl up in bed to read or at a coffee shop sipping a Kopi O, my brain transported to another land.

Yes, I used the same pic from my earlier post. I’m obviously not stuck at that page 😀

I like working with craft materials but have not ventured into scrapbooking because it’s out of my budget. Instead of investing in that expensive hobby, I would always try to think of how to upcycle unwanted or unattractive stuff to something my family would use.

My most recent project which is still not fully completed involves upcycling free magnets that come in the mail.

Some of these magnets have been around for some time, waiting for inspiration to strike and thankfully I’ve gotten round to doing up some and they are displayed on my fridge. What better way to cover up these magnets than with photos and pretty washi tape (see more washi tape ideas on my Pinterest board)? [All photos printed using the Canon Selphy CP910 – click to read my review]

If you’ve noticed how my blogging frequency has dropped in the past year, it’s not just what I’ve explained in this post.

Many times I actually have to prioritise me time activities and exercise almost always comes first because I think I really shouldn’t get any fatter than I already am now although I must admit that I still have to mentally coerce myself into exercising at times. Exercise, though, is actually very in line with my resolutions for the year.

I do yoga mainly in the afternoons when the kids are napping before I cook dinner. That window of opportunity is unfortunately usually only able to accommodate one activity so if I’m not feeling unwell, I’d do some yoga or cycle on my stationery bike. In recent months I’ve picked up Zumba at the community club and my hubby would babysit for that hour on weekends.

The last and probably my favourite indulgence is playing games on the phone. I know that I shouldn’t and how it’s a time waster but the zoning out and relaxation it provides just draws me to it. That’s probably something that I think you’d agree that one can do with an exhausted mind. I like playing boring brainless games as shown in the pic to chill so I don’t download strategy games.

So there, I think that’s about all I do in my Me-time!

What are your favourite indulgences for your Me-time?

This post is part of Mummy’s Me-Time blog train, hosted by Danessa of Prayerfull Mum.

Tomorrow Winnie of ToddlyMummy will share with us her favourite Me-time indulgences. At ToddlyMummy, Winnie shares her thoughts on parenting, fun learning moments of their home learning sessions and outdoor adventures. She sometimes shares about her favourite food too, along with occasional side orders of stuff that she finds useful as a busy mum.
