My girl requested to do another ocean-themed craft as she had so much fun making the contact paper jellyfish craft earlier. Out of ideas, I decided to raid my pantry and ta-da, I came up with a craft idea for her! π It was just as well that she requested to make a starfish as what I gathered from my pantry was really suitable!
To start, draw 5 lines on a paper plate to form the backbone of a star shape then slowly draw the outline of the starfish based using the 5 lines as the guide.
Cut out the starfish, erase the 5 lines and gather the supplies – spaghetti, red beans and mixed grained rice (I used brown and white) and glue of course.
I got my kids to break the spaghetti into small pieces – this is a great fine motor skills activity which my girl did when she was much younger.
My little girl had little problems with this, but to break it into really short segments proved to be a challenge for the little one… and required loads of concentration!
After the kids got the spaghetti ready, we were ready to start!
I applied the glue, bit by bit and they sprinkled what they wanted on it.
It was quiet for quite awhile as they were busy aiming for the paper plate instead of dropping the beans/rice/spaghetti bits everywhere. After my little one was done with his, he got off his seat and went to play with the beans. It was a great sensory activity with them and since they loved playing with beans so much, I included beans in the next sensory bin I made (to be shared next week!).
And when they were eventually done with their starfish, I placed the remaining beans/rice/pasta bits into a spherical container and sealed it with tape and they spent the rest of the afternoon playing with their new shakers! π
