Better health and skin with Resveratrol

It’s the very first day of 2024. Perhaps you’re thinking along the lines of wanting to achieve greater heights in your career, or be a better parent to your child, or be a better child to your parents. Whatever it might be, it is important that you do not neglect yourself because without self-care, other aspects of your life would definitely have to take a backseat when you eventually suffer a burnout or when you are not in the pink of health.

Now as I inch towards being in the mid-40s, I am more determined to take good care of myself. Besides trying to achieve better quality sleep, and working on consuming more collagen, I have started taking a resveratrol supplement.

If you’re not familiar with resveratrol, it is a naturally occurring compound mostly found in the skin of grapes, peanuts and berries. It is a type of polyphenol that may help protect cells from damage, improve cardiovascular health, and have anti-aging properties. It is one of the reasons why some have advocated drinking red wine in moderation since resveratrol in red wine comes from the skin of grapes used to make it. Numerous studies have demonstrated that resveratrol possesses a very high antioxidant potential.

Based on my DNA test results (last year), I have higher needs for antioxidants:

which is why I have to conscientiously increase my intake of antioxidants. Antioxidants are important since they minimise the harmful effects of ‘free radicals’ that are responsible for a variety of health problems such as heart disease and cancer. And let’s be real, it’s not that easy to get all my antioxidant needs from my diet.

Benefits of Resveratrol

Since its anticancer activity was reported in 1997, resveratrol’s health benefits have been intensively investigated. According to various studies, resveratrol has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and cardiovascular protective effects. Therefore, it is useful to protect against diverse chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases , cancer, liver diseases, obesity, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease. It affects cells in the body by protecting them from damage. Most notably, it helps with brain and heart inflammation by providing a protective lining for the blood vessels. It appears to help increase the activity in the mitochondria, which produces energy within cells, potentially extending their lives.

Resveratrol, a key ingredient in many anti-aging supplements, has been proven to help improve the skin by both protecting and fighting off external aggressors such as air pollution, UV exposure and an unhealthy diet. It boosts the skin’s existing antioxidant defenses and improving its ability to respond to (and repair) signs of UV damage. As it is a particularly potent antioxidant, it neutralises free radical damage and allows the collagen to keep on pumping.

In summary, resveratrol possesses many biological properties, but the best described resveratrol property is its capacity to act as a potent antioxidant which helps to promote healthy skin and healthy aging.
