Cooking and baking classes for kids and families at Creative Culinaire

During the March holidays, our kids got busy in the kitchen. Not in our kitchen, but in the fully equipped commercial kitchen at Creative Culinaire.

I was invited to select two classes for them from their website and it was a really tough decision! With a wide range of choices from Western to Asian cooking and baking courses, Creative Culinaire offers many interesting classes to choose from!

Eventually we decided on the Handmade noodle class (kids-only class) and the Rainbow Cake class (parent-child class).

They were thrilled to be dropped off for their noodle class and couldn’t wait to start:

Before the kids got started, Chef Judy went through some basic ground rules and also emphasised the importance of hygiene.

We left the kids in the hands of the chefs there and returned to pick them up when class was over. Besides making the handmade noodles, the kids also learnt to make the dumplings, which included processes like shelling and deveining the prawns and wrapping the dumpling. They also prepared the vegetables. The stock though was prepared beforehand.

All the food was wiped out by the kids and hubby and I were only offered a taste of their food. They said they worked hard that day but they enjoyed the process thoroughly. I can see it most evidently in my boy as his interest in the kitchen has since increased like a hundredfold. He’ll jump at any opportunity to help out in the kitchen nowadays, which is awesome! In fact, his current ambition is to be a chef!

We went to Creative Culinaire the next day to attend the Rainbow Cake class. The kids have always eyed the rainbow cakes at bakeries so you can imagine how excited they were to be able to make a rainbow cake.

Chef Judy started first by demonstrating the initial steps:

The kids were probably happiest mixing the colours for the cake:

But there was much learning involved, and besides mixing colours for the batter, they also had to pour the batter into the cake tins, smooth it out, take out the baked layer carefully and eventually assemble the various layers together.

Chef Judy demonstrated the vital steps and also how we could choose to decorate our cakes.

Hers was professionally done of course. And she did this so quickly and effortlessly with her years of experience.

She even came round to teach little boy to pipe the frosting.

He chose to have a ‘naked’ cake so he only decorated the top.

She wanted to actually decorate hers like Chef Judy’s but I stopped her from getting more of the frosting because without Chef Judy’s skill, I think we’ll end up putting way too much frosting to cover the sides of the cake.

It was overall a very enjoyable morning spent baking and we left with two gorgeous cakes and two children who couldn’t wait to feast on their cakes.

Right after the course, we headed straight to Village Hotel Katong for a staycation and we actually had cake for lunch. A rare treat definitely, for both the kids and us! The cakes were really delicious, light and fluffy and not too sweet overall.
