For my birthday this year, we didn’t decorate a birthday cake as we did last year. My girl was a tad disappointed but really, three birthday cakes for one birthday was really quite enough so I told her to wait till maybe her dad’s birthday in June. Fortunately within that same week of my birthday, I received an invitation from Artzbake for their Artz on Cupcakes class which focuses on cupcake decorating with fondant.
We were really stoked when they could host us that very weekend to fulfil my little girl’s dream of decorating something for me! She had previously decorated cupcakes with small piping bags of cream at her cousin’s birthday party, and I’ve also had my fair share of decorating cupcakes with icing and also when I made Christmas cupcakes, but I’ve never tried decorating with fondant and I thought since fondant is a lot less messy than icing, my little one could participate too, with help.
So we went and found the place with little difficulty – ArtzBake is located just opposite the back of City Plaza shopping centre, tucked away in the cozy corner of Esta Ruby Condominium. We started with making cupcakes where the baking instructor, Chloe, guided my girl through the entire process, from egg-cracking to letting her watch the KitchenAid do its magic. Yes, we don’t own a mixer so my little girl has never seen one at work!
Time to scoop the batter in!
While the cupcakes were in the oven, we got down to playing with the fondant. Unlike the ordinary run-of-the-mill fondant, Chloe has flavoured the fondant and some of the colours of the fondant actually tasted refreshing rather than just pure sugar overload.
The kids had fun rolling out the fondant:
with my boy needing a little help from daddy:
And of course we had to ask if he could make his favourite panda – and fortunately we could!
Here are six of the nine cupcakes we decorated with fondant with the kids!
I was telling my girl that her Hello Kitty looks more like a white tiger without a mouth. Hahaha. Mean mum at work.
I’m sure you can tell from the photos that the kids had a wonderful morning!
With the other three cupcakes, the kids cut out shapes with one while teacher Chloe made beautiful roses with fondant.
Now for the good news for my readers!
