We were really glad to have received a copy of Emily Lim’s most recently published book and this is definitely a book that I’d recommend for a meaningful Christmas gift for a child. As with our previous encounters with Emily Lim’s books (you can read our reviews here and here), we found Tibby the Tiger-Bunny to be an absolutely lovely read.
The story is about an unusual bunny who has a tiger striped coat of fur. And because of his strange appearance, other rabbits wondered if Tibby’s “a tiger that looks like a bunny” or “a bunny that looks like a tiger”. Tibby wanted to fit in so he rubbed his whole fur coat with mud but the rain washed his new coat away. He had no friends so he played hide-and-seek and catching alone – of course, there was no one to catch or seek and no one ever noticed that he was missing.
One day he followed the rabbits quietly when they went for a picnic but a wild boar came along and threatened to spoil the picnic. That was when Tibby had to decided whether he should step in or just watch what happens – after all, he wasn’t their friend and wasn’t invited to the picnic.
A happy ending’s in place and the value of helping others regardless of the way one is treated is definitely worth exploring with children. Also, gaining acceptance and fitting in with others doesn’t always mean having to look like or behave like the rest; it’s your heart and actions that count at the end of the day.
I personally found what the illustrator, Jade Fang, said about Tibby (in her interview with Emily) really refreshing, insightful and definitely something to take up with the kids. She shared that her favourite illustrated page of the book was of Tibby playing alone because she believes that “although Tibby is lonely, he can still have fun playing on his own. Everyone should remain optimistic and positive, just like Tibby, when facing any situation. Once you are comfortable with yourself, the world will change because of you, and that is why you will see that I added little romantic and fantasy touches in this forest scene to illustrate that magic.” (quote taken from Emily’s interview with Jade).
Don’t you agree that this is a great book to gift this Christmas? In fact, it’s great for any occasion but since Christmas is fast-approaching, you may want to consider getting this book as a present!
